FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage — how it works
The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage features 12 groups (A through L), each containing 4 nations. Every team plays 3 group-stage matches — one against each of the other three teams in their group. Points are awarded 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. The top 2 teams from each group automatically advance to the Round of 32. Additionally, the 8 best third-placed teams (ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored) also qualify — bringing the total to 32 teams in the knockout phase.
